Methods of Music Composition Discussed in a Scientific Seminar

Erbil, Tuesday (April 14, 2026)

Dr. Hiwa Talat Aref presented a scientific seminar entitled (An Investigation into the Methods of Music Composition According to Composers’ Styles), in which he highlighted the differences in the process of musical creation and the various approaches composers use to convey their messages.

The seminar focused in detail on the fundamental characteristics of a composer, including creativity, imagination, and proficiency in music theory and techniques. It was emphasized that each composer possesses a unique style and method shaped by their knowledge, experience, and environment. This diversity contributes to the richness of musical expression and helps preserve authenticity.

The seminar also explored different methods of composition, such as inspiration-based composition, planned composition, and improvisation—approaches that are particularly present in Kurdish music. Examples from experimental works by John Cage and film scoring techniques by Hans Zimmer were presented to illustrate these diverse approaches.

In conclusion, it was stressed that the most effective method for a composer is the one that aligns with their personality and way of thinking. Attendees and specialists also exchanged insights on challenges in this field, including the lack of specialized instructors and the impact of the market on musical art.
