At a scientific seminar held in Erbil on Tuesday (February 24, 2026), the concept of the “Added Tone Chord” in music was discussed and analyzed.

Dr. Sirwan Mohammed Mustafa, a specialist in music theory, delivered a lecture entitled “Added Tone Chord”, in which he presented the analytical and scientific dimensions of this musical concept.

The seminar was organized by the Department of Music at the College of Fine Arts. It focused in detail on the definition of added tone chords, which involve adding an extra note to a basic triad without altering its fundamental harmonic function. Instead, the added tone enhances the chord’s color and enriches the melodic texture.

In another part of the seminar, the scientific differences between Added Tone Chords and other chord types such as the Seventh Chord and the Suspended Chord were clearly explained. It was noted that this technique began to emerge in the nineteenth century through composers such as Frédéric Chopin and Franz Liszt, and later became a fundamental element in twentieth-century and contemporary music, including pop, rock, and film music.

At the conclusion of the seminar, participants exchanged observations and insights regarding the notation and interpretation of these chords within musical texts.
