The Reflection of Dadaism as a Movement and School in Music Discussed in a Scientific Seminar

Erbil, Wednesday (April 22, 2026)

Assist. Prof. Dr. Chyayi Kamal Saadi delivered a scientific seminar titled “The Reflection of Dadaism as a Movement and School in the Field of Music,” in which he presented the history, key characteristics, and profound influence of this movement on the world of music.

The seminar highlighted that Dadaism is an artistic and literary movement that emerged in 1916 in Zurich, following World War I, as a reaction to the destruction and chaos caused by the war. It arose as a form of protest against human tragedy and a rebellion against established systems and social traditions.

It also discussed the defining features of the movement, which include the use of satire, linguistic absurdity, and the breaking of conventional rules in order to search for new meaning within the apparent meaninglessness of life. In the musical context, Dadaism sought to explore unconventional and experimental sounds, moving beyond classical frameworks.

In conclusion, it was emphasized that Dadaism was not merely a temporary movement, but one that left a lasting impact on the history of art and music by challenging traditional structures and encouraging creative freedom.
