The Future of Kurdish Vocal Forms in the Age of Artificial Intelligence Discussed at a Scientific Workshop

Erbil, Monday (February 16, 2026)

Assis.Prof.Dr. Sarud Fuad Mohammed and Assis.Prof.Dr. Amandj Ghazi, professors at the College of Fine Arts of Salahaddin University-Erbil, presented a scientific workshop addressing the future of Kurdish vocal forms in the age of artificial intelligence, focusing on the balance between preservation and distortion.

The workshop was held in the city of Koya and organized by the Shaheed Jaafar Institute of Fine Arts (Department of Music), with the participation of music students at the institute’s hall.

The session highlighted the profound impact of AI technologies on music production and traditional Kurdish vocal forms. It was emphasized that while AI provides new opportunities for digitizing and preserving musical archives, it also poses the risk of distorting the “spirit” and national identity embedded in Kurdish music.

Another محور of the workshop focused on various traditional forms such as Ḥeyran, Lawk, Alawesi, Beyt, and Balora. The presenters stressed the responsibility of artists and AI developers to guide artificial intelligence in ways that serve authentic Kurdish identity and prevent the loss of regional expressions and traditional forms.

The workshop concluded with an academic discussion between professors and students on creating audio and textual databases to preserve these musical forms in the modern technological era, aiming to safeguard and develop Kurdish musical heritage.
