Erbil, Tuesday (February 3, 2026)

Asst. Prof. Dr. Surood Fouad Hussein presented the topic “Eastern Modes from the Perspective of Improvisational Forms” in a scientific seminar, where he discussed and analyzed its interconnected aspects with Kurdish music.

The seminar was part of a continuing series of academic activities organized at the College of Fine Arts and conducted by the college’s faculty members.

During the seminar, a brief overview of Eastern music in general and Iranian music in particular was presented. Subsequently, Asst. Prof. Dr. Surood provided a comparative study between Kurdish and Iranian music from the perspective of Eastern musical modes.

He also explained that there is a strong interrelationship between the gushehs (melodic sections) and Kurdish modes. The authentic forms of Kurdish music, such as (Hayran, Lawk, Qetar, and Alaweysi), perform the same functional and expressive roles as gushehs in conveying deep musical emotions and meanings.
