A Scientific Study on Different Methods and Techniques of Music Composition Presented in a Seminar

Erbil, Tuesday (April 28, 2026)

Dr. Hiwa Talat Arif, lecturer and Head of the Music Department, delivered a scientific seminar entitled A Study on Different Methods and Techniques of Music Composition,” highlighting the diversity of compositional approaches and emphasizing that there is no single method to which a composer must strictly adhere. Rather, each artist possesses a unique style that shapes the character of their works.

The seminar provided a detailed discussion of various approaches to music composition, including planned composition, as well as composition through melody, harmony, and rhythm. It was noted that in rhythmic composition, the composer often begins with a rhythmic pattern and then builds the melody upon it, a method that is particularly common in Kurdish and Eastern music traditions.

The seminar also addressed the role of technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in contemporary music composition, particularly the use of software such as FL Studio and Ableton Live. It was explained that today complete musical works can be produced without the use of any physical instruments, opening new horizons for creativity and innovation.

The seminar emphasized that the most effective approach for musicians is the one that aligns with the artist’s own personality and way of thinking. It also highlighted some of the challenges facing this field, such as the shortage of specialized instructors and academic composers in artistic institutions.

At the conclusion, the seminar ended with several recommendations, including the production and translation of scientific music resources into Kurdish, as well as organizing training courses to develop qualified professional cadres in the field of music.
